Transformation

1. Santiago's occupation changed during the course of his journey.

"He owned a jacket, a book that he could trade for another, and a flock of sheep" (Coelho 10)

"The boy had been working for the crystal merchant for almost a month" (Coelho 51)

"The rode for the entire day" (Coelho 153)

Santiago transformed his occupation twice during the story. Each transformation brings him one step closer to his treasure.

2. Santiago's personality transformed over the course of his journey.

  • Santiago begins his journey not believing in himself or his decisions

  • He seeks others to help him make decisions for him

  • As his personality transforms, he makes tough decisions on his own

  • Without this change in his personality, his journey would be impossible and his dream would not be realized

3. Santiago learns and understands the Soul of the World.

"The boy reached through to the Soul of the World, and saw that it was part of the Soul of God. And he saw that the Soul of God was his own soul. And that he, a boy, could perform miracles" (Coelho 152)

Cliffs in Egypt.

\"Thank you", said the boy. "You taught me the Language of the World" (Coelho 153)

This transformation is possibly the most important, because it allowed him to communicate with everyone and everything, including nature.
